Schools in Pripyat
According to the plan of the development of Pripyat city, each of the districts was supposed to have a public school.
Before the accident, there five districts in the city, consequently, there were five schools for 6786 pupils.
Usually, they were built in the middle of the district so that it will be comfortable for all the people to reach the school. In Pripyat, elementary schools were located in the same building with the secondary ones.
School no.1 is located close to the river port and hospital no.126 on Druzhby Narodiv Street (Friendship of Nations Street). As the oldest one, it has the worst condition nowadays. Three parts of it have already collapsed. On one hand, the construction itself had many defects; on the other hand, time and water led to the collapse of the structure. It is strictly forbidden to enter the building; however, classrooms and even Soviet propaganda posters on the walls can be seen even through the windows.
Schools no.2 and no.3, probably, are the most interesting ones. School no.2 is located just 5 minutes away from the main square. Kids’ textbooks, teachers’ material and a lot of other stuff including furniture are left inside the building. School no.3 was biggest one in the city and it had the most sophisticated architecture. Also, it is the most famous school in Pripyat: dozens of gasmasks are thrown on the floor in the canteen. There are some books, posters and other educational material all over the school.
In comparison to the previous two, schools no.4 and no.5 have different architecture and they are empty inside. School no.4 doesn’t even have window frames. As long as the districts 4 and 5 were further from the power plant, the buildings there were less contaminated; so did the equipment and furniture inside. The stuff from these two schools was evacuated to the schools in Slavutych.
